The Kavadi Attam ("kavadi dance") is a ceremonial act of devotional sacrifice through dance, food offerings, and bodily self-mortification. Normally devotees carry milk and water vessels (Kavadi) in the sacred journey to the God in the procession of Thaipusam festival. A large, chaotic procession moves between temples or shrines. Some pierce their tongues with skewers and carry a wooden kavadi decorated with flowers and peacock feathers balanced on their shoulders. But the volunteers who do make the sacrifice create quite a spectacle. The kavadi is a semicircular, decorated canopy supported by a wooden rod that the pilgrim carries on their shoulders to the temple.
