So, Odysseus and Neoptolemus are sent to fetch Philoctetes from the deserted island of Lemnos, where the hero had been abandoned a decade ago with an unhealable and painful wound by none other than Odysseus and the Atreides. Inside the cave, Philoctetes falls to the ground. Neoptolemus takes the bow and arrows and promises not to let another soul touch them. He can no longer keep the pain of his wound hidden, and he begs Neoptolemus to cut off his foot with his sword. In the second kommos (which stands in place of the third stasimon), the sailors remind the grieving Philoctetes that he is not entitled to so much sorrow over his destiny because it is he who has chosen to endure his pain in Lemnos rather than sail away to Troy and earn glory. Neoptolemus tries his best to convince Philoctetes to accompany him to Troy, but the latter agrees to sail with him only for a journey to Greece. The sailors back the demand, and Neoptolemus consents. He is cured. Philoctetes is thankful and claims he now considers Neoptolemus a friend, so he invites him into his cave. As Heracles instructs the two to guard each other’s life under Troy and warns them not to offend the gods (as Neoptolemus ironically will), the play closes with the heroes moving slowly towards the ship, ready to sail away to Troy. Neoptolemus identifies it by the stained bandages drying in the sun, the leaf-stuffed mattress, and the crude wooden cup he finds. The play is set in the tenth year of the Trojan War, shortly after the Greeks discover that, as revealed by the oracles, they need to recruit Philoctetes and make him bring the bow and arrows of Heracles to Troy if they want to win the war. Suddenly, Odysseus appears and tells Philoctetes that he is going to Troy, like it or not. As the sailors prepare to leave, Neoptolemus suddenly comes back, followed by the confused Odysseus. Philoctetes’s wound had been “oozing with pus,” Odysseus says, and his cries of pain disrupted the crew’s prayers and sacrifices to the gods, so they left him on the island. These papers were written primarily by students and provide critical analysis of Philoctetes by Sophocles. Without Philoctetes and his bow and arrows, given to him by the god Heracles, Neoptolemus will not be able to conquer Troy. He would rather take Philoctetes’s bow by force, but Odysseus claims that won’t be possible. Neoptolemus calls Philoctetes from his cave and gives him his bow. Neoptolemus is repulsed by the idea of treachery and initially refuses. Odysseus orders Neoptolemus to find Philoctetes and tell him that the Greeks had convinced him to go to Troy to fight, but he left angrily after Atreus’s sons gave Achilles’s arms to Odysseus. Then, they turn to Neoptolemus and advise him—now that he has Heracles’ bow in his hands—to desert the sleeping man, and leave for Troy as soon as possible.
